Sarah Abbey in the Weight Game

Told through a series of vignettes, “The Weight Game” examines society’s obsessions with weight, self-esteem, and the conundrum that is peanut butter. The audience meets Jessica, a teenage girl coming to grips with the dieting scene; Sylvia, a 50-something woman who attends Weight Watchers as a way to escape her skinny, bombastic husband; and stay-at-home mom Margaret, struggling with her strengths and weaknesses as a woman and mother. Unflinching yet sympathetic, Ms. Abbey imbues her characters with arch humor. Woven throughout the scenes are the author’s take on sorority sisters, reflections on the impact her third-grade students’ fondness for cupcakes has on an otherwise routine morning, and overheard conversational gems.

"I spent the best part of an hour laughing at myself for the things I could relate to, as did my companion and most others."  goldstar reviews

Brian Wetzel in Side by Side: A Journey With Depression - a funny look at serious survival

After intermission, Solofest of the West presents Brian Wetzel's autobiographical one-man, two act, theatrical show Side by Side: A Journey With Depression - a funny look at serious survival.    Since debuting in September of 2004 in Northern California to sold out shows, Side by Side: A Journey With Depression - a funny look at serious survival has toured full time up and down the West Coast and other selected states at venues as diverse as Stanford University, Napa State Mental Hospital, and The Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center.  Brian Wetzel, was a professional stand-up comedian whose career and personal life were absorbed by his struggle with clinical depression, and subsequent addiction. Bringing his sense of humor and experiences together in his one-man show, Brian takes his audience on a unique journey of laughter, painful truth, and finally, hope.  By walking side by side with the affliction, he finds a way to keep surviving, keep learning, and keep living.

"The fact that Brian is able to provide such an honest yet hilarious perspective on a topic like depression is amazing." James Christie, Crisis Line Counselor, San Francisco Suicide Prevention
